Only ten short years ago, Healdsburg, California was a rural area with a fairly run-down plaza. Today, it's gone "Hollywood" with expensive restaurants and hotels, exclusive shops and luxury cars plying the roads. What hasn't changed about Healdsburg though is its natural beauty and bounty for outdoor types. Canoeing and kayaking on the Russian River are favorites for old-timers and new arrivals. Hiking opportunities abound, not only in established preserves but even within a couple of miles of the Healdsburg Plaza. Of course, biking is always an option, providing a very different take on the usual wine-tasting routes.
