Valles Caldera National Preserve [1] is a huge tract of federally-protected land in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, USA. It is minimally developed, and most of its territory is open to visitors only under restricted conditions. For those who make the effort and accept the restrictions, however, the Preserve offers an extraordinary panoply of outdoor recreational opportunities.

You can read more about the history, geography and ecology of the Preserve at its Wikitravel article, which also gives advice on logistics, lodging, nearby attractions, etc.
