Windy Hill Open Space Preserve is a 1308-acre preserve that once belonged to Maximo Martinez as part of a Mexico land grant known as El Corte de Madera. Two ranches existed on this property, the Brown Ranch which is now the location of the picnic area on Skyline Boulevard and the Orton Ranch which is was north at the head of Spring Ridge.

The Peninsula Open Space Trust began purchasing land in 1979 that made up much of this preserve, which is one of many public ridgelands across the Peninsula. Windy Hill includes over 15 miles of trails open to outdoor enthusiasts like hikers, bikers, equestrians and kite-flyers. Hang-gliders can even use non-motorized model gliders with a permit.
