The Low Down

One cool way to beat the heat of a North Carolina summer is to kayak the Fort Fisher Basin near Wilmington, North Carolina. The salt marsh basin divides the Atlantic Coast on the East with the Cape Fear River system to the west, offering ample views of wildlife and plants. Head to the water early to beat the traffic on US 421 and to spot loggerheads and marsh birds walk to the morning sun.

Getting There & Parking

Fort Fisher Basin is part of the Fort Fisher State Recreation Park. Located at the very tip of the Wilmington Peninsula, Fort Fisher is located five miles south of Carolina Beach. If you're heading south from Raleigh, take I-40 East until you reach NC 132 (about 2 hours). NC 132 eventually joins US 421, which you'll follow south to Fort Fisher. Note that on the weekends, especially in the summer, US 421 becomes very crowded as it travels through town (v. via interstate highway).

Route Finding

  • Look for the kiteboarding/kitesurfing guys along the beach as they usually have found the best places to put in for kayaks too. You'll want to put in at the basin instead of near the boat launches to avoid motor traffic.

  • Once you've put in at the basin, you'll head out about 1/4 mile into open waters. You'll see narrower routes through the salt marshes to your left. Follow these routs as long as you'd like. Explore the different marshes, respecting the wildlife within them. Just be sure to make it back to the basin before low tide!

Helpful Hints

Though you're on the water (and perhaps in it depending on your skills), be prepared for the heat. Wear a sun hut, strong sunscreen and a rashguard. Bring plenty of water on the boat, though water is avaiable at the visitor's center.

Also, check for the latest tides so that you don't end up having to portage your boat through salt marsh mud!

Activities allowed
