The Low DownA one and a half hours' walk to the grassy Green Hut site, now, sadly, hut-less. This is an easy little tramp which gives a good introduction to the lovely Silverpeaks area.
Vital Information
Getting ThereFrom Dunedin city, take State Highway 1 north about 20kms to the village of Waitati on a left-hand bend in the highway. Just north of the Blueskin General Store, turn left into Double Hill Road and drive carefully on the steep gravel road, keeping strictly to the left on the brows of hills for 6km. The road continues as Semple Road into the pine plantations of Silverpeaks Forest. Park by a water-storage dam on the right side of the road. A sign here indicates the entrance to Silverpeaks Scenic Reserve. Route FindingWalk the 4wd track opposite the parking area into the Silverpeaks Scenic Reserve. Turn right at the Swampy/Silverpeaks sign and proceed over the Clump and Hightop. Turn left to join the main Green Hut track when you drop down from Hightop. The track is mown over the Clump and Hightop, then becomes an easily followed very well-used foot track. Trail ResourcesThere are no cafes or rest-rooms along this track. There is a customers' toilet at Blueskin General Store, also take-away coffee. Helpful HintsWe recommend that you wear boots, take food and drink, and wear appropriate clothing. Weather can change dramatically and quickly in the hills. We always take a Goretex jacket, just in case. Other TracksGreen Hut Track continues as the Silverpeaks Route network, ultimately to Jubilee Hut or to the northern end of Silverpeaks Forest. Shortly after the start at Hightop, the Swampy Ridge Track branches off and heads towards Dunedin. The southern entrance to Careys Creek Track is a few km back down Semple Road.
