Tramping is what New Zealanders or 'Kiwis' call hiking. There are a number of unique traditions and ettiquettes of tramping in New Zealand which differ from practice in other countries.
- New Zealand conditions are usually wetter and muddier: it is generally expected that a tramper will get wet feet.
- River crossing is the leading cause of death to trampers. Normal practice is to keep boots on while crossing rivers, as this is deemed safer.
Hiking trails are generally known as tramping tracks, an official grading system exists in some areas:
- Walk (suitable for all ages and abilities)
- Track (Bring boots)
- Route (no built trail, navigation skills required)
