Getting There

Most people begin their hike at Tuolumne Meadows which is about an hour's drive from Yosemite Valley. There is a large parking lot near the ranger's station where vehicles can be safely left. There is also a shuttle from the valley that will drop you at the trailhead.

Route Finding

The trail is easy to follow. Which direction you go depends on the reservation you were given. Many people spend the night at Tuolumne Meadows High Sierra Camp (8,600 feet) and then head out in either a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. Going counter clockwise (the easiest) you will first head to Glen Aulin Camp which sits in a valley at 7,800 feet. There is a wonderful swimming hole here and the chance to swim behind the beautiful White Cascade Falls. May Lake Camp follows and sits under Mount Hoffman. Cabins and the dining hall are next to the lake. A hike up to Sunrise Camp at 9,400 feet occurs next and is situated on a bluff overlooking a lush meadow. Merced Lake Camp (7,150 feet) is the largest and sits next to two swimming holes with natural granite slides. Many people spend a layover day here to rest and enjoy the scenery. The last camp is Vogelsang which is the highest at 10,300 feet. Many people favor this camp over the others and spend 2 to 3 days here on day hikes. From Vogelsang it is a 1,700 foot descent back to Tuolumne Meadowns.

Helpful Hints

  • Be warned that if you go as a couple you may have to share a tent as most tents have 4 beds.
  • This is a good hike for older children (11-12), teens, and seniors.
  • Group hikes led by a ranger are available.
  • Backpackers may hike the trail and tent out near the camps and order meals at the dinig hall.
